CSS Bristol

Hi there! Welcome to the brand new website for the Computer Science Society (CSS).

CSS exists to support computer science students at Bristol: we represent all the students within our department, organise social events, run a mentor scheme to answer all your questions (from “Where is the library?” to “What’s this computer architecture lark all about?”) and we’ll even try and help you get a job with our talks from industry! Read more about us if you like.

As you can probably tell, our website is still under development. But we hope it’ll become the hub of our society: you’ll be able to read up on student blogs, get updates on society news and events and take a look through the gallery (if you really have to).

Society Treasurer

Voting is now closed!

As we don’t yet have an elected treasurer for next year, we are going for a vote!

Read the blurbs of the candidates below and cast your vote.

Jamie Henson:
I’m Jamie, a second year on the G403 course. When not trying to figure out how computers work (a battle I’ll inevitably never win) I’m a keen musician, with a bass guitar grafted onto my body many nights a month around Bristol, playing all manner of jazz and funk (and sometimes dubstep, for a slight contrast). I believe that my previous experience in the Goldney Hall JCR and my time as Student President at sixth form before that would make me a solid choice for Treasurer. I’m used to working as a team and generating support, and always enjoy the opportunity to make something great out of a situation. More support and fund-raising = cheaper beer and events – that’s an equation you don’t need to break down semantically. Cheers!

Francis Kwong

“I will do to the best of my abilities to aid a smooth running society.
Providing a regular financial feedback to the committee and help
allocating fund in events to maximise the benefits to both the members and
society as a whole. I will aim to efficiently manage the assets and in
more practical terms, I aim to save more and provide more. Pizza and beer
will not be missed out!”

Also, if you’re buying more than one ticket, please put the names of people coming with you into the personalisation box.

Contest: Think of our new slogan!

So all the other witty departments have them, “Geology rocks!”, “Geography, sponsored by Crayola”, “Fancy a drilling?” (Dentists)… You get the idea.

So for this year’s T-shirts and Hoodies, we think it’s high time CS joined them. And we’re asking for your suggestions. As an incentive, we’ll award the used slogan (which we’ll decide by vote of the shortlist) writer a FREE T-shirt from our last social.

Please write in the comments ideas you have. We’ll shortlist and then put up a poll for the winner. The deadline for submissions is 1st December
